Senganen Garden

"Senganen Garden"

"Senganen Garden" was the villa of SHIMAZU Clan, who were the feudal lords of Satsuma Domain in the Edo Age (1603-1868) . The garden was built in 1658 by SHIMAZU Mitsuhisa (1616-1695) . "Sengan Garden" is located to the north-east of Kagoshima City. You can access to the garden by a City View Bus.

It was late November when I visited "Senganen Garden", a Chrysanthemum Festival was held. Chrysanthemum flowers were in full bloom and the stone lantern was decorated by chrysanthemum flowers.

After passing through the display of chrysanthemum flowers, you will see the main gate of "Senganen Garden". The gate was built in 1895, twenty-eight years after the Edo Age was ended.

Behind the Main Gate, you will see the "Suzu-Mon" Gate, which means the Tin Gate. The "Suzu-Mon" Gate was the main gate of "Senganen" Garden in the Edo Age. Only the feudal lord and his heirs allowed to use the gate.

If you walk to the right after passing through the "Suzu-Mon" Gate, you will see the "Senganen Garden". You will see Mt. Sakurajima behind the lawn garden.

Mt. Sakurajima is an active volcano and the symbol of Kagoshima. The feudal lords of Satsuma Domain stayed at the villa and enjoyed seeing this scenery. They must have lived in luxury.

The below picture shows the Jumping Lion Lantern, which is the largest stone lantern in the garden. On the top of the stone lantern, you will see a Chinese guardian lion.

If you go straight after passing through the Tin Gate, you will see the palace building, named "Hama-Goten". After the Edo Age ended in 1868, the head of Shimazu Clan lived in the palace building. Living area added to the original building in the Meiji Age (1868-1912) for this purpose.

The palace building is open for the public. You will touch with the culture and tradition of the Shimazu Clan. You may also feel that the decorations of the building and displays are influenced by China.

During the Edo Age, the Edo Bakufu, the shogunate, closed Japan and also prohibited all feudal domains to trade with foreign countries. However, Satsuma Domain invaded "Ryukyu Kingdom" (Okinawa) in 1609 and governed "Ryukyu Kingdom" during the Edo Age. Satsuma Domain had traded with China through "Ryukyu Kingdom" in the Edo Age.

"Shoko-Shuseikan" Museum

To the west of "Senganen Garden", the "Shoko-Shuseikan" Museum is located.

In 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry came from United States and forced Japan to open the country in 1854. People in Japan at that time recognized that the western countries were far ahead in advanced compared with Japan, who had closed the country more than two hundred and sixty years and had continued the feudal society without any improvements.

Satsuma Domain also started to enrich the feudal domain as soon as Commodore Matthew Perry came to Japan, including the development of the heavy industries, like the steel production and the shipbuilding. SHIMAZU Nariakira (1809-1858) , the 28th head of the SHIMAZU Clan, built the "Shoko-Shuseikan" as the headquarter of industries development.

In front of the entrance of "Senganen Garden", the hundred-fifty pound cannon is displayed.

Satsuma Domain also expanded the military power at the end of the Edo Age, by introducing the western technologies. The cannon was produced at the "Shoko-Shuseikan".

If you walk to the left from the cannon, you will see the "Shoko-Shuseikan" Museum.

The museum building was originally a machine factory. It is designated as an important property of Japan and also the world heritage.

Because of such industrialization and military power development, Satsuma Domain defeated the TOKUGAWA Bakufu, the central government of Japan during the Edo Age, together with Choshu Domain. In 1868, they established the Meiji Government.
