Okinawa is located to the most south-west of Japan in the East China Sea, 1560 kilo-meters away from Tokyo. Okinawa is even closer to Taiwan than Kyushu Island, which is the most west island of major four Japan islands. Okinawa consists of 356 islands. People live on forty-nine islands and nobody lives on other islands. Naha is the capital of Okinawa on the Okinawa Island.

Okinawa used to be the "Ryukyu Kingdom" until the end of the Edo Age (1603-1868) . "Rykyu Kingdom" was founded in the early twentieth century and was partially belonged to both Japan and China until the end of the Edo Age. Because of such history and location, Okinawa has their own history and culture.

In 1945, the Battle Okinawa happened. The battle was the only ground battle of World War II fought on the Japanese islands. The battle went on for about three months. Approximately 200,000 of people died at the battle and approximately 190,000 victims were private citizens of Okinawa. There are memorial sites related to the Battle of Okinawa.
After World War II, Okinawa was governed by United Nations until 1972.
