Daikanbo on Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

Daikanbo is an observatory, located on the east side of Mt. Tateyama. You can enjoy a very spectacular view of Mt. Akazawa across the deep and steep Kurobe Gorge. The altitude of Daikanbo is 2,316 meters in heighth. You will see Lake Kurobe at the bottom of Kurobe Gorge. It is located approximately 850 meters below the Daikanbo Observatory.

Daikanbo is accessible from Murodo, by a trolley bus, which is located to the west side of Mt. Tateyama, by a trolley bus.

In the middle of October, a lot of tourists and climbers visit the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route to enjoy autumn scenery. The Murodo Bus Terminal was very crowded. The Tateyama Tunnel Trolley Bus service is available from Murodo to Daikanbo through a tunnel to cut across the Tateyama Mountain Range.

The tunnel between Murodo and Daikanbo was originally dug to deliver building materials of the Kurobe Dam in 1971. The length of the tunnel is 3.7 kilometers.

The tunnel is very narrow. There is only one-way traffic in the tunnel. Buses pass each other at the middle of the tunnel, which is right under Mt. Oyama, the main peak of the Tateyama Mountain Range.

After a ten minute bus ride in a dark tunnel, you will see a spectacular view of the North Japan Alps from the Daikanbo Observation deck.

The mountain on the left side is Mt. Harinoki (Altitude: 2,821 meters), the right end is Mt. Akazawa (Altitude: 2,678 meters).

You will also see a ropeway to Kurobe-Daira, located at the bottom of Kurobe Gorge. You would notice that Tateyama Ropeway does not have any steel towers to support ropes between Daikanbo and Kurobe-Daira. The reason is to avoid any potential damage from avalanches. This area has a lot of snow in winter and avalanches occur frequently.

On the other side, you will see Mt. Oyama (Altitude: 3,003 meters) just above you.

As it is seldom that two mountain ranges with approximately 3,000 meters in height run parallel, the landscape from Daikando is very unique and really impressive.

How to get there
You can access Daikanbo both from Toyama Station through Tateyama and Bijyodaira and from Ohgisawa through the Kurobe Dam.
