Kurashiki Honmachi Area

Kurashiki, located approximately 20 kilometers to the west of Okayama City, was the capital town in this area during the Edo Age (1603 - 1868) . The main town is located to the north of the Kurashiki "Bikan" Historical Quarter, where rice warehouses to store annual rice tax were located along a moat.

After visiting Kurashiki Ivy Square, I went to Kurashiki Honmachi Area through a small street to the west side of Kurashiki Ivy Square. Old houses are along on the street.

This picture was taken in 2010 and you will see electrical wires between electric poles. Now, these electric poles and wires are removed and are laid underground, as of 2019.

Historical warehouse style buildings are located on the both side of the street. This area is already in the Honmachi Area.

If you go to the north then take a left at T-Junction, you will find INOUE Residence. INOUE Residence was built in the early eighteenth century and used to be a merchant's family.

This house is the oldest building in Kurashiki Historical District and is designated as an important property of Japan. If you go to east from INOUE Residence, you will find also many Historical warehouse style buildings along the street.

There was no sightseer in this area, but Honmachi Area is designated as a conservation district of traditional buildings.

If you walk further to east, you are in "Higashimachi" area, the east town area.

"Higashimachi" Area is partially designated as a conservation district of traditional buildings. In Kurashiki Historical District, you will see very narrow alleys between buildings.

This kind of ally is called "Hiyasai" in Kurashiki. This alley seems an entrance of time travelig machine, which takes you to the Edo Age (1603 - 1868) .
