Nakamachi Preservation District in Hirosaki City

Nakamachi is a Preservation District in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, located to the north of Hirosaki Castle. This area remains "Buke Yashiki", the residences of retainers of the TSUGARU Clan, the lord of Hirosaki Domain, in the Edo Age (1603 - 1868) .

A covered alley, called "Gangi" or "Komise", remains along a busy street. The covered alley was built for pedestrians to walk without suffering from snow falling or accumulated snow in winter. Each house provided their land for the alley.

ISHIBA Residence used be a mercantile house in the Edo Age (1603 - 1868) . Currently it is a liquor store. ISHIBA Residence is open for the public. A hearth is located in the main room.

There is no documented history when the residence was built. HASHIBA Residence is designated as an important cultural property of Japan.

To the north of HASHIBA Residence, "Samurai", the retainers of the TSUGARU Clan lived in this area. Hedges of "Samurai" residences line along a small street.

This scenery remains the same atmosphere as in the the Edo Age and it was very impressive. Some residences are covered by blackboard fences.

Two other residences are also open to the public. One is IWATA Residence, located to the east end of Nakamachi Preservation District.

IWATA Residence was built in the early nineteenth century. The residence is open to the public everyday from April to June, except Monday and Thursday from July to October and only weekends from November to March.

The other one is ITO Residence.

ITO Residence is open to the public everyday from April to June, except Tuesday and Friday from July to October and only weekends from November to March.

This district is designated as an important preservation district of historical buildings.

How to get there
From Tokyo, You can take a Tohoku Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori and change a train to Hirosaki. From Hirosaki Station, a "Tamenobu Bus" is available to "Tsugaru Neputa Mura" bus stop. Nakamachi District is north of "Tsugaru Neputa Mura".
