Kuroishi Historical District

Kuroishi is located to the north-east of Hirosaki City in Aomori Prefecture. TSUGARU Nobufusa initiated the Kurosaki Domain in 1656. TSUGARU Nobufusa was the second son of TSUGARU Nobuhira, the second lord of the Hirosaki Domain.
During the Edo Age
(1603 - 1868) , the descendants of TSUGARU Nobufusa governed the Kuroishi Domain.

The historical district remains in downtown Kuroishi. Covered alleys, named "Komise", remain along a main street of Kuroishi.

The covered alleys were built in the Edo Age for pedestrians to walk without suffering from snow falling or accumulated snow in winter. Each house provided their land for the alley.

TAKAHASHI Residence in the covered alleys, shown in the top picture of this page, is designated as an important cultural property of Japan. And, this area is designated as an important preservation district of historical buildings.

In winter, downtown Kuroishi was almost empty as no one was there. However, the covered alleys have helped people to walk easily when snow accumulates.

To the south of "Komise", the government headquarters of Kuroishi Domain, "Kuroishi Jinya", was located. The Kuroishi community center is located at the site. The stone monument of the government headquarters of Kuroishi is located at Miyuki Park.

To the east of "Kuroishi Jinya", Kuroishi shrine is located. Kuroishi Shrine is dedicated to TSUGARU Nobufusa, who was the founder of Kurosihi Domain.

Kuroishi is a historical town and it was calm and silent.
