"Kisha Michi" Avenue in Yokohama
"Kisha Michi" is an avenue from the north of Sakuragucho Station to the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouses, located on Tokyo Bay in the Minato Mirai Area", Yokohama. Minato Mirai Area used to be an industrial area and many plants and warehouses were located. "Kisha Michi" was a freight railway line to the former Yokohama New Port Wharf. Please refer the page of "Minato Mirai Area" for more detail: http://handejapan19.html.xdomain.jp/TravelDestinations/Kanto/MinatoMirai_E.html The freight line was active until 1986. When a passenger ship to San Francisco across the Pacific Ocean put to sea, a passenger train ran through the freight line to Yokohama Port. After the freight line was abandoned, the site of tracks were improved as a promenade in 1997. A promenade is a long, open, level area usually next to a river or large body of water where people may walk. At that time, the "Minato Mirai Area" was reborn as a modern area. On "Kisha Michi" avenue, three railway bridges remain. The first bridge is named "the first Minato Bridge". This bridge was a double track bridge made in the United States in 1907. |
