"Harbor View Park" in Yokohama

To the south of Yamashita Park, "Havor View Park" is located on a small hill. "Havor View Park" is named "Minato-no Mieru Oka Koen" in Japanese. The place was originally the military camps of Uited Kingdom and France, when Yokohama port was openrd for the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France and Russia at the end of the Edo Age (1603 - 1868) .

If you walk to the south-east from Chukagai-Motomachi Station on the Minato-Mirai Line, you will see the entrance of "Havor View Park".

The entrance is located at the foot of the hill where "Havor View Park" is located. After walking up stairs to the hill, you will see the site of the French consulate.

The French consulate was built in 1896. It was destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and rebuilt in 1930.

If you walk up to the top of the hill, you will arrive at the observation platform.

The view from the observation platfoem is spectacular.

You will also see the Yokohama Harbor and the Yokohama Havor Bridge to the east from the park. To the north, you will see Yokohama Marine Tower and the skyscrapers in "Minato-Mirai" Area.

To the south of the observation observation platform, the flower bed is located.

In May, the roses are in full bloom.

Approximately, two thousands seedlings of roses are cultivated in the garden. There are three hundred and thirty varieties. One of them is "Diana, Princes of Wales, which is shown in the below-right picture.

In the rose garden, British House, Yokohama is located. It was built in 1937 as the as the official residence of the Consul General of the United Kingdom.

Originally, United Kingdom forces stationed in this place, after Edo Bakufu, the Japanese feudal government headed by a Shogun, had contracts with the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France and Russia to open five ports in 1853.

In 1969, Yokohama city acquired the building and it is open to the public. The rooms are well decorated and beautiful.

The interior decoration at British House is really western style. It is really impressive.

How to get there
From Tokyo, you will take a Tokyu Toyoko Line to Motomachi-Chukagai (China Town). It will take you seven minutes to Harbor View Park on foot.
