Horikawa Pleasure Boat in Matsue

Matsue Castle, built by HORIO Yoshiharu(1543-1611) during 1607 and 1612, was surrounded by inner and outer moats. Just after the Edo Age (1603-1868) ended in 1868, Matsue Castle was abandoned. However, almost all the moats in Matsue remain. Other castles and castle towns built during the Edo Age also had moats surrounding the castle. These moats were filled up over and converted to road systems when the castles were abandoned. Matsue is a rare case that moat system from the Edo Age remains.

Now, a pleasure boat tour is in operation through the moat system. There are three boarding points in Matsue City. One of them is located to the west from Shiomi-Nawate Historical District.
