Otaki in Chiba Prefecture

Otaki is a small town and is located in the middle of Boso Peninsula. Otaki used to be a castle town during the Edo Age (1603 - 1868) . In 1590, HONDA Tadakatsu (1548 - 1610) , who was a vessel of the first Shogun, TOKUGAWA Ieyasu, built Otaki Castle and the castle town in Otaki.

If you walk to the east from Otaki Station on the Isumi Railway, you will reach to the main street in Otaki. There are a couple of old stores along the street.

On your right at the first corner, WATANABE Residence is located. The old house was built in 1849 and is designated as an important property of Japan.

The roof was changed from a thatched roof to a tiled roof, but still remains the atmosphere as it was in the Edo Age.

If you walk further to the south, the main street tuns to the right. After turning to the right, you will see a Japanese "Sake" brewery. The store curtain,which was displayed in front of the "Sake" store, was very impressive. The name of the "Sake" brand of this brewery is "Otaki Jyo", which means the Otaki Castle in Japanese.

From the "Sake" brewery, I walked to "Ryogenji" Temple. On the way, an old Japanese-style hotel is located. This hotel opened in the Edo Age (1603 - 1868) . The hotel building was built in 1885.

The hotel is located at the south end of the town area. Agricultural fields extend over the area south of the hotel. You will see the Otaki Castle on your right, beyond agricultural fields.

Otaki Castle is the landmark of this town.

Finally, you will arrive at "Ryogenji" temple. "Ryogenji" temple was built in 1590 by HONDA Tadakatsu and became the family temple of HONDA clan.

The tomb of HONDA Tadakatsu is located at the temple. HONDA Tadakatsu moved to Kuwana in Mie Prefecture in 1601 and died there in 1610. His nephew HONDA Masatomo (1599 - 1638) , the third feudal lord of Otaki Domain, raised the tomb of HONDA Tadakatsu.

Otaki is a small town and remains historical atmosphere during the Edo Age. It wiould be nice to make a one-day trip from Tokyo together with train rides on the Isumi Railway and the Kominato Railway.

How to get there
You will take a JR Uchibo Line train to Goi and take a Kominato Railway train to Kazusa- Nakano. Change to a Isumi Railway and get off at Otaki. Or, take a JR Sotobo Like to Ohara and change to a Isumi Railway.
