Nagamachi Buke Yashiki District in Kanazawa
To the west of Kanazawa Castle, the historical district, named ""Nagamachi Buke Yashiki District", is located.
In the Edo Age, the retainers of the MAEDA Clan, the lord of Kaga Domain, lived in this area.
The mud walls, which surround these retainer's residences, characterize the scenery of "Nagamachi Buke Yashiki District".
High class retainers, including the chief retainers, lived in the south part of this area. Middle to lower class retainers lived in the northern part.
Irrigation channels flow through both the east and the west side of the Nagamachi Buke Yashiki District.

NOMURA Residence is located along the Ohnosho channel flowing to the west side of the district.
NOMURA family was one of high class retainers of MAEDA Clan with fifteen hundred "koku" of income.
The residence is open to the public.
The first generation of NOMURA Family was NOMURA Nobusada. He was originally from the Nagoya area, and he moved to Kanazawa together with MAEDA Toshiie, the first generation of MAEDA Clan.
MAEDA Toshiie was a retainer of ODA Nobunaga and TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi and he had a hard time, to be in a retainer position of these two people who governed Japan at the Azuchi and Momoyama Age.
NOMURA Nobusada served MAEDA Toshiie even in such hard time and he obtained deep trust from MAEDA Toshiie.
Nobusada's offspring served for the MAEDA Family through the Edo Age, which lasted for over 260 years.

Rooms and the garden of the residence remain as they were in the Edo Age.
These retainers in the Edo Age lived a simple life, eventhough their income was high enough to live a better life.
A narrow street in the district has corners with 90 degrees bent. This was designed to prevent potential enemies from entering into this area.
As Kanazawa City was not destroyed in World-War II, the houses built in the Edo Age remain now, as the same as other historical districts, like "Higashi Chaya District". When you walk on the street, you will feel as if you were in the Edo Age.
This district is designated as the important preservation district of historic buildings.
